Background

Social Context: Mental Health

Alone with You in the Ether isn’t just a love story but also an examination of how learning to live with mental illness can become a process that arises out of love. Throughout history, mainstream society has stigmatized mental illness in all its forms. Despite the prevalence of mental illness and the likelihood that someone may experience it during a lifetime, it remains taboo and a source of shame for those whom society deems neurologically atypical. Regan’s mental health struggles stem from a mood disorder that remains unnamed throughout the novel. She’s prone to mood swings and erratic behavior, and she’s intensely emotional. Like many people with similar challenges, Regan is stigmatized even by her own family, who often attempt to contact her but seem only to want to patronize and criticize her when she’s around. The lack of acceptance that Regan feels from her family contributes to her poor mental health. On the other hand, while Aldo has the love and support of his family, he still experiences thoughts of dying by suicide and relies on cannabis to quell his racing thoughts. By relying on one another, Aldo and Regan access a source of support and understanding they wouldn’t otherwise have. Stories like Alone With You in the Ether, which feature honest depictions of people with mental illness, foster empathy and understanding and thereby help reduce the stigma toward mental illness. By refraining from naming either of the protagonists’ conditions, the author maintains relatability and aids in suspending judgment that often results from discussions of terms like “bipolar disorder” or “obsessive-compulsive disorder.”

Cultural-Geographical Context: The Chicago Art Institute

The Chicago Art Institute is a significant and deeply historical part of Chicago and American culture. It was built in 1879 as both an art museum and Fine Arts school, a decade after a massive fire raged through 73 miles of the city and destroyed approximately 17,500 buildings. About one-third of Chicago residents were unhoused after the fire, and a “Great Rebuilding” took place to recover the city and its spirits (“The Chicago Fire of 1871 and the ‘Great Rebuilding.’National Geographic). A city known for its appreciation of art, Chicago boasts a more affordable and open space for artists than other cities such as New York City or Los Angeles. In 2009, the Chicago Art Institute underwent a large expansion, and it currently houses over 300,000 works of art. One of its galleries contains a wide array of Impressionist artwork from the 19th century, including Regan’s favorite painting, Nocturne: Blue and Gold by James McNeill Whistler, painted in the early 1870s. The Art Institute serves as one of the primary settings for Alone with You in the Ether and acts as the conjoining function that brings Regan and Aldo together. Through Regan’s work at the Institute, Aldo gets to know her, and he finds that Regan is an artist even though she doesn’t see that in herself. Art and the art museum are parts of her personality and are inseparable from who she is; she works there even though she doesn’t have to, and she takes pride in her ability to decipher every stroke and technique in a given piece.
