Grisha who have passed their training come and go frequently from the Little Palace. One day a girl named Zoya arrives, the same Grisha girl who was attracted to Mal in Chapter 1. She is popular, powerful, and beautiful, and she knows it. She is a Squaller, the highest rank of Etherealki. Zoya also wears an amplifier, meaning she is one of the Darkling’s favorites. Zoya dislikes Alina and makes snide comments. Zoya visits Alina’s combat lesson, and they are paired together. Everyone stops to watch as they fight. Although Zoya is stronger than Alina, Alina skillfully brings Zoya down by using Zoya’s own strength against her. Furious, Zoya lashes out and uses her powers to slam Alina into a wall. Alina is taken to the infirmary. Marie and Nadia visit Alina to gossip about consequences Zoya will face, sharing that Zoya left crying from a meeting with the Darkling. To Alina’s surprise, Zoya is jealous of Alina for being the Darkling’s favorite.
Later, Alina wakes up to see the Apparat appear in the infirmary from the shadows. People on the borders are making altars to Alina. The Apparat tells Alina faith is “strong enough to topple kings, and even Darklings” (161). He leaves as quickly as he appeared.
Alina asks Genya to find out if Mal is okay. Alina is growing more disheartened. She doesn’t want to let down people who are counting on her powers. Looking at her plain appearance in the mirror, Alina is she does not belong with the Grisha.
At Alina’s next lesson with Baghra, Alina finds the Darkling and Baghra arguing. The Darkling softens when Alina arrives. The Darkling wants to make Alina an amplifier from Morozova’s stag, a mythical but powerful creature the Darkling thinks might truly exist. He believes the stag’s power is their best hope of saving Ravka.
Time passes into winter. One day, on her way to Baghra’s hut for a lesson, Alina receives a note from Genya telling her Mal is stationed in the north, is healthy, and can receive letters. Alina concludes Mal has chosen not to write back. This belief both angers and embarrasses Alina, who has sent Mal many letters asking him to write.
Baghra notices Alina’s anger and provokes Alina further. Alina is struck by how alone she is now that Mal has left her behind. A repressed memory from the orphanage comes back to Alina. The day the Grisha Examiners arrive to test Alina and Mal, they separate the two. One of the women, a living amplifier, holds Alina’s wrist, and Alina’s power begins to come forward. Afraid they’ll discover she’s different from Mal, Alina decides to hold the power down and breaks free from the woman.
Processing the memory, Alina realizes she has been using her energy to keep her power hidden ever since. This is why she looks so sickly and exhausted and why she never has an appetite. Though Alina thought she was trying her best with her Grisha lessons, she realizes a part of her “just wanted to go home to Mal” (182). Whispering an apology to the power she has held down so long, she calls it forward. Light bursts through the room.
Things greatly improve for Alina. She spends more time with other Grisha and is stronger in combat lessons. Botkin gives Alina a knife of Grisha steel, telling her she’s earned it. One day, Genya takes Alina to the Grand Palace to try on clothes for fun. Looking at herself in the mirror, Alina is surprised and pleased by how her appearance has changed.
Baghra remains tough in her lessons with Alina, pushing and demanding more power. However, Alina still isn’t strong enough to destroy the Fold. Although Baghra thinks it’s foolish, the Darkling is adamant that Alina needs the stag amplifier. The Darkling walks Alina back to the Little Palace after her lesson, complimenting her appearance and making conversation. The Darkling admits he cares about Alina’s opinion of him. He abruptly kisses her, surprising them both. As they pull away, one of the Darkling’s favorite Grisha appears with news, and the Darkling leaves.
Alina spends the rest of the night with the other Grisha, trying to distract herself. She falls asleep thinking about the Darkling and his kiss with nervous excitement.
Zoya’s arrival intensifies Alina’s struggles with belonging and self-doubt. Zoya is a beloved Grisha who also likely shared a romantic moment with Mal in Chapter 1. Zoya represents everything Alina wants and is failing to achieve.
The final straw comes when Alina learns Mal can be reached via mail to his regiment and concludes Mal is choosing not to respond: “The only person in the world who truly knew me had decided I wasn’t worth the effort of a few words. But I was holding on still. Despite all the luxuries of the Little Palace, despite my newfound powers, despite Mal’s silence, I held on” (182). Believing Mal does not care about her and Alina has “nothing” and “no one” allows the memory of the Grisha examination to resurface (179). This is a pivotal moment in the plot. It solves the mystery of why Alina’s power was elusive and is a key moment for her character development. She has been both literally and metaphorically starving herself of her true essence. Once sickly with little appetite, Alina grows strong and finds belonging as she steps into her power. Letting go of Mal allows Alina to embrace life as a Grisha, moving her towards who she is to become.
Romantically, as Alina gives up on Mal, her connection with the Darkling grows. The powerful and confident Darkling is uncharacteristically vulnerable with Alina. This connection leads to their short kiss in Chapter 13. As Alina finally settles into life with the Grisha, the kiss complicates Alina’s position in the Grisha and with the Darkling.
